Multi-level pressure-treated wood decks at Boshamps Seafood and Oyster House in Destin, FL
The right decking options can transform a simple space into a functional, beautiful, and long-lasting outdoor living space. A well-designed deck is much more than a simple platform. Instead, it’s an extension of your home or the highlight of your property, a gathering place for friends and family, and a feature that adds charm and value.
Your new deck design requires several considerations, such as the size, shape, materials, and the details you’ll include. Many decks are rectangular, but depending on the location, you may consider a semicircle to provide a more sweeping view. When considering the size, your deck designer will need to think about how many people will use the deck. If family and maybe friends will primarily use the structure at a private residence, the deck will likely be smaller than if it’s the central feature in a community garden.

Many materials will work for a deck, but a deck construction crew looks at the area and features to decide which one – or which combination – will be best suited.
Pressure-Treated Wood. Pressure-treated wood is one of the most popular choices for decking because of its classic appeal and affordable pricing. It resists rot, mold, and insect damage when maintained properly. It does need to be sealed, but it has a traditional, natural look that can be accented with stain or paint.
Exotic Hardwood Decking. Exotic hardwoods like ipe and cumaru are more durable than common timbers. Most exotic hardwoods we use are from trees native to rainforests, which means that they are naturally resistant to rot and insects, and they last several years longer than common lumber. As with any timber, Nature Bridges and other green builders only source hardwood that is sustainably harvested.
Modified Wood Decking. Modified wood decking is timber, but it has been treated with a biobased liquid, reinforcing the wood. The process used takes it a step above traditional pressure treating, changing the lumber at the cell level and allowing it to last longer. The strength and durability of modified wood decking is similar to that of tropical hardwoods.
Structural Composite Decking. Composite materials can be made with different blends of wood fiber, recycled plastic, fiberglass, high-density polyethylene, and other materials. Composites are known for durability and low maintenance because they resist warping, splintering, and fading. They aren’t usually painted, but they are available in a variety of colors, and they can even mimic the look of natural wood.
Structural Plastic Decking. Structural plastic decking, also called plastic lumber, is manufactured using recycled high-density polyethylene plastics. This eco-friendly alternative to putting those plastics in landfills doesn’t splinter, rot, or decay. It is also easy to clean and is available in a wide array of colors and textures, including woodgrain textures.
Decorative Features for Style and Function

Once the basic design and materials are decided, your deck designer can look at other features that can make your outdoor living space feel more like home. From style choices to functionality, there are many ways to enhance the deck.
Patterned Deck Layouts. One way to add interest is by adding a pattern when laying the planks for the deck. Diagonals, borders, or alternating tones can add a little playfulness to the area.
Built-In Seating. Rather than – or in addition to – bringing in standalone seating, adding built-in benches or even picnic tables can maximize the space and make it more welcoming.
Custom Railings. In many areas, railings are important as a safety feature. But, they don’t need to be plain. Sleek metal designs or even wood patterns can reflect your property’s style, making it a visual focus for guests.
Accent Lighting. Another safety feature that can add the right ambiance is lighting. Using LED or solar lighting can be a cost-effective way to enjoy your deck even at night.
Regardless of the materials and style, a thoughtfully designed deck can become a preferred location for gatherings and enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. Contact Nature Bridges today to explore decking options that boost the functionality and aesthetics of your outdoor space.
